Athens is the capital and largest city of Greece. Athens dominates the Attica region and is one of the world's oldest cities, with its recorded history spanning around 3,400 years. Classical Athens, as a landlocked location was a powerful city-state that emerged in conjunction with the seagoing development of the port of Piraeus. A centre for the arts, learning and philosophy, home of Plato's Academy and Aristotle's Lyceum, it is widely referred to as the cradle of Western civilization and the birthplace of democracy, largely due to the impact of its cultural and political achievements during the 5th and 4th centuries BC in later centuries on the rest of the then known European continent. Today a cosmopolitan metropolis, modern Athens is central to economic, financial, industrial, political and cultural life in Greece.

Athens is a good base for exploring the region, the main monument to visit is of course the Acropolis, the hill upon which the Parthenon and other important sites are located. The climb can be hot, but it is worth your while, also the Epidaurus, Corinth and Mycenae can all be see on a trip from the capital, Cape Sounion, Delphi and Marathon (42 km away) are good options too . Pireaus is the port of Athens and the place to start your trip to the Greek islands and The Plaka also is one of the nicest areas of town: ideal for shopping and wandering through cobblestone streets or sitting down in one of the many tavernas.

Go on an adventure!
